Your Uncle

a medium brown dog stares at you from his seat on a leaf-patterned beige armchair. he has one elbow propped up on the arm, his paw hanging over the front edge nonchalantly. his gaze is intense, and one ear is perked up. there’s a wood-burning stove in the background that gives this photo a real “fireside chats” vibe.

This is your uncle you only see once a year. He was recalling his college football days but has switched to his opinions about the youth. Thinks your generation’s problem is that you all have phones and underwater basket-weaving degrees. It isn’t that he wasn’t hugged enough as a child, it’s actually that you were hugged too much as a child. Don’t get him started on avocado toast.
